President’s 2011 Trade Policy Agenda Published

As required by statute, the President’s 2011 Trade Policy Agenda was delivered to Congress on March 1.  USTR Ambassador Kirk provided a brief overview of the policy.   The policy has a significant focus on supporting increased and better jobs for Americans, while opening new markets for American-made products.  Other key goals include implementing the U.S.-Korea agreement, resolving issues related to the pending trade agreements with Panama and Colombia, advancing the TPP talks and the Doha round of negotiations in the World Trade Organization (WTO), and Russia’s accession to the WTO. The Administration has supports renewal and long-term extension of key programs such as Trade Adjustment Assistance and expired trade preferences.

In related news, nearly two-thirds of the new Republican House members sent a letter to President Obama offering to work with him to obtain approval from Congress on the trade agreements with South Korea, Columbia and Panama.   However, other Republicans are skeptical that the agreements will move forward until the budget issues are resolved.
